We all love a rogue and by his very name, Unfug is full of mischief, musical mischief. Translated literally from German as nonsense, Unfug loves to mix elements that make sense and those that don’t to define a completely different thing. It’s that out-of-the-box thinking and complete disregard of musical constructs that really sets him apart, resulting in a steady and continued upswing in his appeal and fanbase. “Sometimes my music is as obscure as the fog over the Kiel fjord at half past 4 in the morning;” He says “But it’s influenced by everything that happened sound wise for the last 40 years.”
Growing up on the North German coast has had a profound affect on Unfug. His music, much like the cold sea that crashes against the shore, is flowing, deep and full of life. His personality, his soul is bared for all to see in everything he makes and 2016 saw him fulfil a personal goal with the release of his first artist album: The Deep Sea & It’s Rivals.
“I always had a thing for concept albums and themed music. My favourite records are actually concept albums, stuff like Crack the Skye or Frances The Mute (if you’re familiar with Prog Rock or Metal).” He says matter of factly, before raising an eyebrow mischievously, “The other thing is that I always liked the sea. The calm yet unpredictable movement of silent waters.” Such was its success that the label commissioned a full remix album and ran a competition for one of the stand out tracks.
Really great producers have an overarching love of all forms of music. For Unfug that was primarily the joy he found in guitar music; groups like Mastodon or The Mars Volta, who “have an incredible drive in their tracks while ignoring any regular musical structure” mixed with a smorgasbord of electronic sounds from his Motherland and beyond guided his artistic mindset.
“Stoner Rock or Desert Rock also plays a huge part in my listening habits,” He informs us, “The tracks are often long and monotone, but with heavy structures and are actually quite similar to the electronic music I prefer and try to make.” With releases on Mittel Zum Zweck, Plus Plus Records, trndmsk Records as well as finding “a safe and caring place for his sonic creations” with Gibbon Records has really helped to build Unfug’s sound and industry presence. And as a regular contributor to German Uber-label Traum Schallplatten on their ‘Tour de Traum’ series, Unfug is now in an enviable place in his career. The wind really is in his sails.
